Realignment Roulette – Make it Seven

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

Yesterday, I looked at the NHL going back to, essentially, their 1993-1998 system with their Central, Pacific, Atlantic, and Northeast Divisions. Today, I’m going to throw a different scenario out there. Go with North, South, East, and Central (West is left out since the four West Coast Teams are either North or South). The North Division is 35 million Canadians Dream, and the South Division is Gary Bettman’s Sunbelt all thrown into one.

My main problem with this division is that I have legitimately no idea what to do with the Conferences. Do we lump North and East, and then Central and South? That could give us some trans-continental first round playoff match-ups, which I don’t think too many people want. So I present a slightly radical solution, get rid of the Conferences. I’ll get to what that means for the playoffs and scheduling shortly. But first, it would look something like this…

Realignment Roulette – Align Like It’s 1999

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

With the impending move of the Atlanta Thrasher to Winnipeg, it seems like everyone in the hockey blogosphere is putting their two cents in when it comes to divisional realignment.  Had Phoenix moved to Winnipeg this would have been easy, move them to the Northeast, and Colorado to the Pacific, no problemo.

But with an Eastern Team moving West, we have some interesting scenarios. Who moves to the Eastern Conference. Detroit was reportedly promised a move East if it came up, Columbus is the most Eastern team in the Western Conference, and Nashville would be the most logical fit into the Southeast Division. Some rumours have been going around that the league will oddly have Winnipeg play in the Southeast for a year.  While this seems stupid, it seems like they want to do a whole new realignment and want to explore it fully in time for the 2012-13 season.

After the lockout, the NHL had an idea of going to back to 4 divisions, similar to what they had up to 1998 when they switched to their six division model.  Also, I have read some rumours of the NHL making a Canadian Division, or going for a radical 3 Conference alignment.

I personally am not a huge fan of the 6 divisions that they have now. It gives a huge advantage to anyone playing in a weak division (e.g. the Capitals until this year, or the Canucks now), it puts a huge advantage on the Atlantic Division since they are all in Tri-State Area and don’t have to travel very far, and it makes both the Southeast and the Pacific division pretty lame.  Basically they stacked up the traditional rivalries like the Canadian cities and the New York connection, and divided the sunbelt in half and went from there.

So with that in mind and the impending Westward move of the Thrashers, I came up withfive different scenarios. In this post, I’ll examine the first one which is sort of a “Ctrl+Z” of the divisional alignment of the past 13 years.

Deal or No Deal: NHL Off-Season Edition

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

For all of the talk and rumours going around about big name trades this off-season, there really hasn’t been that much.  Sure Nathan Horton, Jaroslav Halak, and Jason Arnott were traded, but after that there hasn’t really been all that much to be honest.  I think that in the coming days this will change.  The key figure holding everything up right now is Ilya Kovalchuk.  The Kings and Devils are actively pursuing him, with rumblings of the Islanders, Flyers, and Rangers having interest.  After he gets signed, I think that a number of dominoes will start falling and some potentially big names will be on the move.

Let’s have a look at the big names that are in all of the rumours…

1st Round Playoff Predictions

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Welcome one and all to an annual tradition here in my section of the blogosphere, playoff predictions! The playoffs this year are sure to be interesting. Lots of questions: Can Pittsburgh repeat? Can Ovechkin match his rival from last year? Has there ever been more goaltending issues at once? Wait a minute…Phoenix is in the playoffs? And so on, and so forth. Here to help me, as always are my good friends Jeff and Troy, as well as a coin, which I do believe bested my last year.

Glen and Troy’s NOlympic Team – Part 2

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Welcome back one and all to Glen and Troy’s NOlympic Team. Today we are going to have more drafts and analysis to round out our squad’s.

In case you forgot from last time, here are our teams after the first five rounds

Trontario: F – Stamkos, LeCavalier, St. Louis, Penner, Doan

Glenitoba: F – Carter, D – Bouwmeester, Phaneuf, Green G – Ward

That brings us to the start of round 6 with…

Glen and Troy’s Quarter Season Predictacular – Eastern Conference

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Well the season is just over 20 games old and things are starting to get interesting.  In keeping with a very rarely followed tradition, my hetero-life mate Troy and I are going to try and lay it on line and see where each team will be at the end of 82 games.  Because of the sheer volume of writing we did I decided to split this post in two.  We’ll look at the boring Conference first today.

NHL Pre-Season Predictacular

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Well, it’s nearly that time of the year, when I feel the need to put it all on the line and make a series of predictions for the upcoming NHL Season. After a very busy off-season it seems like there are a lot of interesting questions to start the season out.

Can the Penguins repeat? Will Crosby, Ovechkin, or Malkin win the scoring title? Can the Wings go deep in the playoffs? Who will make the Olympic teams? Who will own the Coyotes?

I certainly don’t feel like I can answer too many of those questions, but I can make some educated guesses as to where the teams will place in the standings. These are of course guaren-damn-teed*

Olympic Camp Breakdown

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

As I type right now some of the best players in the world are in Calgary trying their heart out to represent Canada next February. Any of the 46 players at the camp would make great members of an All-Star team like this. However, once it is all said and done only 23 players (plus maybe a few alternates) will be playing. I have broken down my thoughts for most likely team that I see happening.

Of course, this is all based on speculation at this point, and making the best possible “paper team” that is available. Also, Yzerman has been clear to point out that the camp selections may not be limited to players who are attending the camp. However, I would be shocked if anyone not on this list becomes a member of the team.

Next to each player is a blurb about why I think that they will/won’t make the team, also a number between 1 and 10 for how likely I think that they are to make the team.

So without further ado…
