Welcome one and all to an annual tradition here in my section of the blogosphere, playoff predictions! The playoffs this year are sure to be interesting. Lots of questions: Can Pittsburgh repeat? Can Ovechkin match his rival from last year? Has there ever been more goaltending issues at once? Wait a minute…Phoenix is in the playoffs? And so on, and so forth. Here to help me, as always are my good friends Jeff and Troy, as well as a coin, which I do believe bested my last year.

Glen and Troy’s NOlympic Showdown
Monday, February 1st, 2010After 46 rounds of sheer awesomeness it is time for things to get real. With the help of my favourite website in the history of the universe (for this week), WhatIfSports.com it is time for a showdown.
For those of you unfamiliar with this site let me fill you in on a few things. First off, it is AWESOME. Secondly, it is a fantasy sports simulator where you can choose any two sports teams of all time and have them have a showdown. Naturally, I spent a lot of time simulating various hockey games (note: the ‘76 Habs win the most). Thirdly, you can draft your own dream team, which naturally we did to simulate our NOlympic teams. Fourthly, this site is AWESOME.
Quick Thoughts on the New Leaf Nation
Monday, February 1st, 2010Why must they do this to me?
I HATE the Leafs, really I do. I hate them a lot. My favourite team is the Senators, and my second favourite team is whoever the Leafs are playing. I have refused to take their players in hockey pools, no matter how stupid of a choice that may be. I even refused to take any of their players in the NOlympic draft. Luckily Troy didn’t know that, or he could have taken Beauchemin much later on.
I laughed, oh how I laughed when they traded away their first round pick for Phil Kessel, knowing full well that it was going top end up a high lottery pick. But it doesn’t matter, they would have squandered Taylor Hall anyway. Just like they do every big name prospect.
But now they go out and aquire one of my favourite players, and another that I have a huge soft spot for. Is Brian Burke trying to torture me?
The Leafs shook the hockey world aquiring both Dion Phaneuf and J-S. Gigure this weekend. Phaneuf is one of my favourites and I have always thought the Gigure is a solid goalie, even as he struggles.
Phaneuf joins Tomas Kaberle, Francois Beauchemin, Mike Komisarek, and Luke Schenn on the Toronto Blueline. This forces me to say somethign that I have never wanted to say. Toronto may just have the best defense in the league.
Uggh…I feel dirty.
That beings said there is one glaring question that must be asked of the team: who the hell is going to score?
They put Matt Stajan over his head as the number one centre, and Niklas Hagman was a solid winger, and now they are both gone. Is Phaneuf going to have to play centre for a while? Because I don’t know who else is going to right now.
Obviously this can only mean one thing. They are going to have to trade some of the assests thtey have at the back end to shore up their forward unit. Obviously all signs point to Kaberle being traded. But of course, he has that pesky no trade clause until the draft. He was almost dealt to the Bruins last year, and they could sure use his help right now, so that seems like a logical move. Especially if the Leafs can get back some of their draft picks. Other teams, like the Flyers have repeatedly expressed their interest in Kaberle, but it remains to be seen if he is interested in them.
Another interesting scenario could have the Leafs trading away Luke Schenn. I mean think abotu it, they almsot dealt him away to the Lightning as part of a package to get their draft pick last year, and probably would have had the Islanders not selected Tavares first overall.
Imagine that you are a team like the Hurricanes or Blue Jackets. Struggling at the bottom with little relief. You are excited to take a big draft pick, but as always there is a certain uncertainty about taking prospects. Do you draft someone like Tyler Seguin and hope that it works out, or do you trade the pick for a slightly more proven (and slightly more experienced) asset in Luke Schenn. He can still easily be a cornerstone of your franchise, and be a solid building block for the future.
Either way, one of those two defenseman will be traded by the draft at the very latest. Because really, there is only enough room to play four of them, and the Leafs just do not have the forward depth to build forward. Something has got to give.
And for what it’s worth, Burke has given the Leafs something this weekend that they haven’t had for a very long time. My attention. And I’m sure I’m not the only one.
Until next time,
G
UPDATE: Reportedly the Flames are goign to trade Oli Jokinen and Brandon Prust to the Rangers for Ales Kotalik and Chris Higgins. I guess I’ll have to make a State of the Flames Nation address soon as well…
Glen and Troy’s NOlympic Team – Part 3
Friday, January 15th, 2010…and so it ends.
Today we will compelte the final 8 rounds of the NOlympic draft, as well as state our line combinations to compete for NOlympic Glory.
Just to recap from last time, our picks were:
Trontario: F – Stamkos, LeCavalier, St. Louis, Penner, Doan, Smyth, Cammalleri, J. Staal, Lucic, Tanguay, D – Campbell, Regher, Beauchemin, G – Price, Turco
Glenitoba: F – Carter, B. Richards, Savard, Fisher, Weiss, Sharp, Horton, Neal, Roy, D – Bouwmeester, Phaneuf, Green, Robidas, Hamhuis, G – Ward
Again, Troy definitely has the advantage in offense, and made some gains in goaltending. But he is still lagging in defense, both from his back end but also from his forwards.
Which brings us to…
Glen and Troy’s NOlympic Team – Part 2
Tuesday, January 12th, 2010Welcome back one and all to Glen and Troy’s NOlympic Team. Today we are going to have more drafts and analysis to round out our squad’s.
In case you forgot from last time, here are our teams after the first five rounds
Trontario: F – Stamkos, LeCavalier, St. Louis, Penner, Doan
Glenitoba: F – Carter, D – Bouwmeester, Phaneuf, Green G – Ward
So Troy still has to take 8 forward, 7 defensemen, and 3 goalies while Glen needs to nab 12 forward, 4 D, and 2 goalies.
That brings us to the start of round 6 with…
Glen and Troy’s NOlympic Teams – Part 1
Tuesday, January 5th, 2010Steve Yzerman gave me the best birthday present I could have ever asked for. A chance to talk about hockey!!! The team was named back on December 30th, and since then a great deal of debate has started, and as usual it has been focused on who is not playing as opposed to the great picks that were made. With a host of names ranging from Green, Doan, Fisher, Ward, and pretty much anyone good who plays for Tampa or Calgary.
Instead of giving a position by position break down like I was intending, I decided to start my Olympic analysis a little differently. My hockey-hetero-life-mate Troy and I have decided to play scavenger and each take our own teams full of players that have been left over. This is going to be a series of posts, starting with today, as we both make our initial 5 picks today.
Just out of interest, we are starting with the team that was named. Any replacements made due to injury are going to be ignored, because, really, that would be a little too difficult.
In debating over this we argued about who should make the first pick and decided to have an MSN rock-paper-scissors war. It lasted forever as we both insisted on taking rock every time. Finally in the 127th round a victor was declared as Troy took…a bigger rock.
He used his first pick to take:
