On Kovy — Chapter II

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

This just doesn’t end, does it?  It looks like all of the drama surrounding Ilya Kovalchuck’s massive $102 million contract is back for another season, making this one of the more tumultuous off-seasons ever.

In case you haven’t heard, heard an independent arbitrator has ruled in the NHL’s favour and has voided Kovalchuck’s insane contract for cap circumvention.  As a I said a few weeks ago, it’s about time that the NHL stepped in on these contracts.  I can’t say that I’m particularly surprised or stunned by the news, but what shocks me is the fact that the league has said that they will be looking into other, already registered contracts, namely those of Roberto Luongo, Marc Savard, Marian Hossa, and Chris Pronger.  This my friends, has the potential to get ugly, very, very, ugly.

On Kovy

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

It looks like everyone spoke to soon about Ilya Kovalchuk’s mammoth contract with the New Jersey Devils. The NHL has rejected his 17 year, $102 million contract because of cap circumvention. All I can say here is, what took them so long?

Precedent was set for this kind of front-loaded, stupidly long term contracts last year with Chris Pronger, Marian Hossa and Roberto Luongo’s long term contracts. In all three cases the contracts start out huge but taper off very rapidly, and takes them all past their obvious playing days.

While this may not seem like a big deal, it is something that really shouldn’t be allowed. In all cases the Devils, Flyers, Blackhawks, and Canucks all are creatively getting around the cap. They are signing these player for longer than they will play, knowing full well that they will retire before the contract runs out. Once the players retire, they still get paid but their salary does not count against the cap.

Why Not Canada?

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

One of the more interesting things to circulate both TSN and The Globe and Mail last week was the six-part, multi-platform story where they investigated the possibility of Canada adding a seventh NHL team, title Why Not Canada?. They looked at four potential locations for franchises including Winnipeg, Hamilton, Quebec City, and a second team in the Greater Toronto Area.

If you did not get a chance to either watch it on Sports Centre, or read it, I highly suggest that you do it now. It was a very interesting and intelligent look at the different locations and went beyond the “We Want a Team Here” and looked at the building, corporate support, legal issues, and regional demographics.

After it was all said and done, they seemed to be high on the possibility of a team in either Winnipeg or Quebec, and not so much on adding a third team to Ontario. As much as I would love a team in Southwestern Ontario, or in Toronto, I think that I understand the situation now.

Deal or No Deal: NHL Off-Season Edition

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

For all of the talk and rumours going around about big name trades this off-season, there really hasn’t been that much.  Sure Nathan Horton, Jaroslav Halak, and Jason Arnott were traded, but after that there hasn’t really been all that much to be honest.  I think that in the coming days this will change.  The key figure holding everything up right now is Ilya Kovalchuk.  The Kings and Devils are actively pursuing him, with rumblings of the Islanders, Flyers, and Rangers having interest.  After he gets signed, I think that a number of dominoes will start falling and some potentially big names will be on the move.

Let’s have a look at the big names that are in all of the rumours…

3rd Round Playoff Predictions

Monday, May 17th, 2010

Welcome back to our Predictacular, just when we thought things couldn’t be any crazier after the first round, things get even crazier.  The 8th seed Habs rock the defending Stanley Cup Champion, the fourth 3-0 comeback in North American Professional Sports takes place, the Sharks find a way to not choke, and the Hawks rally from losing 5-1 at home.  These are a host of things that would have been difficult to predict, but we’ll try our best here…

1st Round Playoff Predictions

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Welcome one and all to an annual tradition here in my section of the blogosphere, playoff predictions! The playoffs this year are sure to be interesting. Lots of questions: Can Pittsburgh repeat? Can Ovechkin match his rival from last year? Has there ever been more goaltending issues at once? Wait a minute…Phoenix is in the playoffs? And so on, and so forth. Here to help me, as always are my good friends Jeff and Troy, as well as a coin, which I do believe bested my last year.

Looking to 2014

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

Pardon me for not making any more Olympic posts a few weeks ago.  After predicting that Canada would beat the US in the round-robin, I felt anything that I would say would jinx the luck of our boys.  And in the aftermath, I really didn’t feel like I had all that much to say.  It was amazing.  It really, really was.

When thinking about the Olympic Games, there are a few things that I need to say:

1)  Yes, I watched the game, even if it started at 4am here.  I wrote a post about the experience over at Lost Lao Wai.  I hope you’ll enjoy it.

2)  Yes, I organized a pool for the Olympics.  And yes, I won on the tie-breaker.  First time I’ve ever won a big pool!

3)  Yes, I think that the NHL players will be in Russia in 2014.  There’s no reason for them not to be.  It’s THE biggest way for the game to grow, and they need all the great publicity that they can get.

4)  Yes, I still think that Canada will win Gold.  The US team will be very good, and the Russian team will be motivated, but our team will still be the favourite.

Speaking of the 2014 team, allow me to make my first of several cracks at guessing the roster…

Glen and Troy’s NOlympic Showdown

Monday, February 1st, 2010

After 46 rounds of sheer awesomeness it is time for things to get real.  With the help of my favourite website in the history of the universe (for this week), WhatIfSports.com it is time for a showdown.

For those of you unfamiliar with this site let me fill you in on a few things.  First off, it is AWESOME.  Secondly, it is a fantasy sports simulator where you can choose any two sports teams of all time and have them have a showdown.  Naturally, I spent a lot of time simulating various hockey games (note: the ‘76 Habs win the most).  Thirdly, you can draft your own dream team, which naturally we did to simulate our NOlympic teams.  Fourthly, this site is AWESOME.

Quick Thoughts on the New Leaf Nation

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Why must they do this to me?

I HATE the Leafs, really I do.  I hate them a lot.  My favourite team is the Senators, and my second favourite team is whoever the Leafs are playing.  I have refused to take their players in hockey pools, no matter how stupid of a choice that may be.  I even refused to take any of their players in the NOlympic draft.  Luckily Troy didn’t know that, or he could have taken Beauchemin much later on.

I laughed, oh how I laughed when they traded away their first round pick for Phil Kessel, knowing full well that it was going top end up a high lottery pick.  But it doesn’t matter, they would have squandered Taylor Hall anyway.  Just like they do every big name prospect.

But now they go out and aquire one of my favourite players, and another that I have a huge soft spot for.  Is Brian Burke trying to torture me?

The Leafs shook the hockey world aquiring both Dion Phaneuf and J-S. Gigure this weekend.  Phaneuf is one of my favourites and I have always thought the Gigure is a solid goalie, even as he struggles.

Phaneuf joins Tomas Kaberle, Francois Beauchemin, Mike Komisarek, and Luke Schenn on the Toronto Blueline.  This forces me to say somethign that I have never wanted to say.  Toronto may just have the best defense in the league.

Uggh…I feel dirty.

That beings said there is one glaring question that must be asked of the team:  who the hell is going to score?

They put Matt Stajan over his head as the number one centre, and Niklas Hagman was a solid winger, and now they are both gone.  Is Phaneuf going to have to play centre for a while?  Because I don’t know who else is going to right now.

Obviously this can only mean one thing.  They are going to have to trade some of the assests thtey have at the back end to shore up their forward unit.  Obviously all signs point to Kaberle being traded.  But of course, he has that pesky no trade clause until the draft.  He was almost dealt to the Bruins last year, and they could sure use his help right now, so that seems like a logical move.  Especially if the Leafs can get back some of their draft picks.  Other teams, like the Flyers have repeatedly expressed their interest in Kaberle, but it remains to be seen if he is interested in them.

Another interesting scenario could have the Leafs trading away Luke Schenn.  I mean think abotu it, they almsot dealt him away to the Lightning as part of a package to get their draft pick last year, and probably would have had the Islanders not selected Tavares first overall.

Imagine that you are a team like the Hurricanes or Blue Jackets.  Struggling at the bottom with little relief.  You are excited to take a big draft pick, but as always there is a certain uncertainty about taking prospects.  Do you draft someone like Tyler Seguin and hope that it works out, or do you trade the pick for a slightly more proven (and slightly more experienced) asset in Luke Schenn.  He can still easily be a cornerstone of your franchise, and be a solid building block for the future.

Either way, one of those two defenseman will be traded by the draft at the very latest.  Because really, there is only enough room to play four of them, and the Leafs just do not have the forward depth to build forward.  Something has got to give.

And for what it’s worth, Burke has given the Leafs something this weekend that they haven’t had for a very long time.  My attention.  And I’m sure I’m not the only one.

Until next time,

G

UPDATE:  Reportedly the Flames are goign to trade Oli Jokinen and Brandon Prust to the Rangers for Ales Kotalik and Chris Higgins.  I guess I’ll have to make a State of the Flames Nation address soon as well…
