Now that Sumemrslam is over (and was pretty darn awesome), it’s time to start looking towards the Biggest Event in my dorky year, Wrestlemania. As per usual on this blog, I like to make some educated guesses as to what the card will look like come March. Now this one promises to be extra intriguing, as we are going to be in Atlanta, and there is talk of it being WCW Themed, which could mean just about anything. Also, add in the fact that at least two season of NXT call-ups have the potential to make their Mania Debuts here.
I think it’ll all come together like this…
Fireworks, God Bless America!
United States Title Match
John Morrison (c) vs. R-Truth
While these two are friends and on-again-off-again partners, I would much prefer to see JoMo revert to his heelish ways. Having him win the US Title, change his demeanor into the cocky-heel that we all loved on ECW and have him get paranoid of the intentions of his “friend” before blasting him could be a great move. These two could provide a fun opening match with some big moves and big emotions.
Interpromotional Challenge
Edge vs. Christian
I’m really holding out for this one to happen. I love both wrestlers, I love them as a team, and damnit, I’d love them as opponents. This is a feud that hasn’t happened since 2001, and it could be a fun one to revisit, especially when revisiting 2001 (the Death of WCW) is on the order this evening.
Hair vs. Hair
Kofi Kingston vs. CM Punk
I know that CM Punk recently had his head shaved after his match with Mysterio, but there’s still a lot more to go. Since he started his “Straight Edge Saviour” gimmick, he’s also grown a beard and chest hair. It would be great to see Kofi Kingston put his dreads on the line against Punk’s chest hair. Seeing Punk get waxed would be a great Wrestelmania moment.
WWE Tag Team Title Match
Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre (c) vs. Rey Mysterio and Bill Goldberg
Yes, you read that right.
On the most recent edition of Monday Night Raw, they had Rhodes and McIntyre team up to try and earn a shot at the Tag Title. I personally would love to see them win the gold and elevate the titles and themselves, similar to what The Miz did in the spring. The back-story to this match would be simple. The WWE is planning on having a WCW themed Hall of Fame this year, and you could easily have Rhodes and McIntyre cut promos about how stupid the HoF is, given that it’s full of old, useless, unattractive people, and that WCW is dead and nothing good came out of there (including Cody’s dad on both parts). After a while they would get interrupted by Rey Mysterio, claiming that WCW was great and revolutionary blah blah blah. After a few weeks of the young champions attacking him, he is eventually saved by the premier member of the class of 2011, Bill Goldberg. He agrees to step into the ring one more time to teach these punks a lesson and stop them from sullying the name of WCW.
Now a few modifications can be made to this match. For starters, the tag titles can easily be involved in a later match, I just thought it would be a nice moment to have two WCW stars hoist some gold in Atlanta. And secondly, I have omitted Chris Jericho from this card, as it appears that he won’t resign with the company this fall. He would fit well into this match, on either side. I’d like him as a face, since he is the only active performer other than Mysterio and Big Show to spend time in WCW, and the heels could get someone like Swagger or Ted Dibiase Jr. to be on their side.
27 Man Battle Royal
featuring Jack Swagger, Ted Dibaise Jr., Evan Bourne, MVP, Kane, Santino, Luke Gallows, William Regal, Zack Ryder, Tyson Kidd, DH Smith, Goldust and 15 more people from the current roster and/or some legends
Given that Money in the Bank seems likely to continue as its own event, we need a match to get everyone on the show. A Battle Royal is the most obvious way to do so, and it could be fun to have it be similar to the Diva’s on from a few years ago, featuring some competitors from the past as well. To make it a little interesting, there should be some incentive, like a Trophy saying “Mr. Wrestlemania” or a title shot at a future PPV (but not whenever you want it like $ITB). I put the competitors in order of people I’d like to see win it, with Swagger, Dibiase, Bourne and MVP being the ones who would benefit the most from a big win.
Interpromotional Challenge
Triple H vs. Alberto Del Rios
This one is a bit of a shock I know. Triple H is a hard one to place right now. We have no idea as to how well he’ll be able to move after his most recent injury, and now that he’s over 40, how much longer will he be able to go? After ending his Wrestlemania Main Event losing streak against Orton a few years ago, he dropped down to the middle of the card last year and performed pretty well. I think that it would be great if he lent his name and talents to a rising star, much like he did for Sheamus. The company seems high on Rio at the moment, so it makes it a logical choice. Obviously, I’d have the Game win here, maybe to drop the rematch the following month.
16 Man Elimination War
The Nexus vs. The Genesis
If Genesis win, The Nexus must disband, if Nexus win then all members of Genesis must join them
The Nexus = Wade Barrett, Michael Tarver, David Otunga, Heath Slater, Alex Riley, Michael McGillcuty, Eli Cottonwood, and Husky Harris
The Genesis = Daniel Bryan, Kaval, Darren Young, Percy Watson, Titus O’Neil, Justin Gabriel, Skip Sheffield, and Lucky Cannon
Alright this one needs some explaining…
First off, I love The Nexus angle on Raw, it has been routinely my favourite part of the show since June. Secondly, I enjoyed the concept of all the members of NXT2 attacking Kaval after he won. And here’s how I see it playing out a bit. The losing rookies from Season 2 join Wade Barrett and seek to join his group. He agrees, but they need to streamline things so they eliminate Titus O’Neil and Percy Watson (similar to how Darren Young was eliminated because they all need some more time in development). They terrorize Bryan and Kaval for months. Eventually through some way or another two members of this new Nexus get kicked out (I had Gabriel and Cannon, just because I think that they can play as a face much better than anyone else), also Skip Sheffield is cast as “replaceable” after they did just fine with him injured.
Of course, this all comes to a head at Wrestlemania where Bryan and Kaval agree to form their own team of 8 to take on The Nexus bringing back people like Young, Watson, and O’Neil, plus taking Cannon, Gabriel and Sheffield into the fold as well. They add the big stipulation making this a “Final Battle”.
Obviously most of these names can be changed, so long as the more talented members of Barrett, Bryan, Kaval, Harris, Gabriel, Sheffield, Riley, and McGuillicuty end up evenly split, it should be a good match. But given how many people are involved in this match, the dead weight wrestlers like Tarver, O’Neil, and Cottonwood would need to be eliminated very quickly.
This match could also feature the Tag Titles in a roundabout way. I love the idea of The Nexus winning the titles and adopting the “Freebird Rule” to switch the people wrestling around, so they would be forced to defend those titles here. If The Genesis (not sure how I feel about that name, but it seems to fit) win, then they could decide to have a four-way tag team match featuring all members to determine the title holders.
Ohh obviously the faces win this one. Ideally with one of the members of The Nexus turning on Barrett at the end, allowing Bryan to be the sole survivor.
Intergender Tag Team All in One Match
Intercontinental and Women’s Titles on the Line
Dolph Ziggler (c) and Aloisia (c) vs. The Big Show and Beth Phoenix
I’m not sure where else to put these guys, so they get the “sub main event comedy spot”. I love Ziggler keeping a long reign with the IC Title, and it seems like a matter of time before the 6 foot 9 diva Aloisha gets to hold the strap. Given that Vickie is her pro, these two would be a logical team here. The Big Show has a history with Vickie, so this could be a logical blowoff to that. Another thought I had was to have Aloisha turn and make the match Ziggler/Vickie vs. Big Show/Aloisha, but I think that Beth Phoenix deserves a spot on the card.
WWE Title Match
The Miz (c) vs. Randy Orton vs. Sheamus
A match to determine the future of the company between three of its biggest rising stars. I like the idea of The Miz holding his briefcase for a long time before finally cashing it in much later. We could have Sheamus hold the title until Elimination Chamber before losing it to Orton in the match. The Miz (who had said that he was going to cash in at Wrestlemania) changes his mind and takes the title from Orton. Both Sheamus and Orton want rematches, and ta-da, match set.
World Title Match
The Undertaker (c) vs. John Cena
Now this is undeniably *the match* from this company’s point of view. The two biggest names, head to head on the biggest stage. They have done Title vs. Streak twice in recent years, so this creates a much different dynamic. I like the idea of Cena winning the Rumble and then interfering in the Elimination Chamber to give The Undertaker the title, in a sort of nod to HBK last year.
As for who wins, I have no idea. Do they let the streak go to 19, in order to try and make it 20, or do they let Cena be unquestionably ”The Man”. I know what I’d do, but that doesn’t really matter I suppose…
Until next time,
G
