In a growing tradition of my cyber life, I am going to take the time to make some guaranteed predictions for 2010…
1. Prime Minister Ignatifeff - No, this isn’t a repeat from last year. I’m convinced that if there is ever going to be a time when Canadians are finally sick of Steven Harper it should be now. His popularity is plummeting during this prorogue fiasco, and the opposition may just have their act together enough to make something out of it. It seems like for the first time since 2006 the opposition are finally able to shape the debate and that should not be in Harper’s best interest
2. Academy Disappointment - Despite massive box office success and being a great movie, Avatar will not win best picture. It will get one of the extra five sympathy/populist places on the list of nominees, but it will not win. Still, Cameron’s film will take home lots of (mostly technical) awards…and tonnes of money.
3. Canadian Gold - Canada will not only win both gold medals at hockey, but we will also sit on top of the medal table. True north strong and free, bitch!
4. Thou Shalt Not Tweet – Those of us behind the Great Firewall have no had regular access to Twitter, Facebook, and a host of other sites for months. I don’t imagine that getting any better in the next 11 months.
5. Not the Last of Coco – As of last night, Conan O’ Brien was off the Tonight Show. He had a big severance deal and a huge amount of public support, so I don’t think that he will easily ride off into the sunset. He’ll do something big later on this year to make sure that we don’t forget about him.
6. Lots of New World Champions – After last year I thought that we weren’t going to get one, I think that we’ll get a few this year. I think that at least three people in WWE or TNA will hoist the belt that haven’t already. On a limb I’m going to guess Morrison, Kingston, Matt Morgan, Desmond Wolfe, and possibly Ted Dibiase as the most likely candidates.
7. Lost will Rule – After perhaps their strongest season last year, they are going to end this year after the 6th season. I don’t know how else to put it, but it’s going to be awesome. Most of the answers will make sense…I hope.
8. The Temperature Will Continue To Rise – No Copenhagen, no problem, right? Somehow I doubt that the problem of Climate Change will just go away.
9. Democrat Stronghold – The lost Senate seat in Massachusetts is bad news for the Obama crew but it’s not the end of the world. I think with the mid-term elections coming in November, we will see a more focused and determined president and congress. Even though they may not have a super-duper majority in the fall, they will still be in the driver’s seat.
10. Three More Countries – In 2009 I didn’t quite make it, however I feel that I’ll be able to do it in 2010. I’m already planning on going to Singapore in a few weeks, and I imagine India, Nepal, and the Philippines would be the most likely new additions.
11. Haiti, the new Indonesia – As horrible as I feel for typing this, I just can’t help but feel this to be true. Back in 2004 when the tsunami hit Indonesia there was an intense outpouring of grief and aid. However, people then moved on to the next cause-de-jour and parts of Sumatra are still in rubble. I can’t help but think that this will happen again.
12. The King and The Big Apple – I know the rumours are out there with LeBron and the Knicks, but I just don’t see it happening. LeBron wants to win, full stop. He won’t get to do that in New York. If the Cavs can make a strong push and maybe even win the championship this year, then I think he’ll stay in Cleveland.
13. I Will Have a Great Year – I’ve got a new job in Guangzhou next year to look forward to, and several more months here in Suzhou to look forward to.
Check back in December to see if I’m right about these.
Until next time,
G
