Back in January I made some “surefire” predictions for 2009. some of which came true, some of which did not.
I’ve had a good tradition of predicting things before on this blog, back in 2007 I went 9-2-2 in my guesses, while last year I went 9-3-1. Could I follow it up with 2009? Let’s see..
1. Prime Minister Ignatieff – Well I certainly struck out with this one. Ignatieff had a golden opportunity, but it hasn’t seem to have came true. Now with the Afghan detainee scandal, the economy still struggling, I thought that there was a chance for a late break. But instead, we don’t get to even have Parliament. It’s hard to change Prime Minister’s when there is no Parliament. Bad start to this for me, and an even worse start for Democracy.
Glen’s Prediction Record: o-1-o
2. Victory from Beyond – This one was easy as I said that Heath Ledger would win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. There was no debate about that one as his performance in The Dark Knight was simply legendary.
Glen’s Prediction Record: 1-1-0
3. Original 6 Success – I was correct in saying that two Original Six teams woudl be in the Final Four and damnit Chicago and Detroit where both there. We Huzzah!
Glen’s Prediction Record: 2-1-0
4. Another Three Countries Scratched Off My List – I failed on this one. I got to add Thailand and Indonesia, but no others. I thought of going to Singapore, Mongolia, or Nepal but it didn’t really work out for me. Ah well, there is always next year!
Glen’s Prediction Record: 2-2-0
5. No Big 3 Bankruptcy – Well GM killed that dream.
Glen’s Prediction Record: 2-3-0
6. Liberal Upswing – I thought that another Democracy would join the US in going down the Liberal route….thankfully for the first real time in history Japan has gone down that route. The Japanese situation is going to be interesting to watch as they had the LDP in power for essentially 64 years, and now it’s different. Hopefully more countries, especially Canada, go down that route.
Glen’s Prediction Record: 3-3-0
7. Obama’s Popularity Will Drop – Not really a big surprise here. He continues to battle with a difficult economy, a dangerous and unpopular war, and of course it is impossible for anyone to live up to his unrealistically high expactations.
Glen’s Prediction Record: 4-3-0
8. The Temperature Will Continue to Rise – Of course it will, especially after the failures of Copenhagen.
Glen’s Prediction Record: 5-3-0
9. No New World Champions – After Edge, Triple H, Cena, Batista, Jeff Hardy, CM Punk, and The Undertaker were trading titles in the WWE while Sting, Foley, Kurt Angle, and AJ Styles were shifting things around in TNA it looked like this was a safe prediction, but then something unreal happened. Sheamus put John Cena through a table. I still can’t believe that the pale one holds the gold. I’m sad to be wrong, but it looks like he may be turning into something special after all.
Glen’s Prediction Record: 5-4-0
11. Star Trek Will Rule Once More – Well duh!!!! It ruled, no questions asked.
Glen’s Prediction Record: 6-4-0
12. The Economy Will Rally – Well it didn’t get worse did it? Not sure if “rally” was the right word, but not sure if I’d go as far as to call it wrong. It did get better, but that wasn’t that big of a stretch, I’ll call it a push.
Glen’s Prediction Record: 6-4-1
13. I Will Have a Great Year – Damn straight! It’s been a rollercoaster but a damn good one. China continues to give me more good days than bad ones, you can’t ask for much more than that can you?
Glen’s Prediction Record: 7-4-1
So a bit of a step back from the past few years but still a solid record. Hey, how long did it take for the Leafs to get 7 wins?
Check out the next few days as I make predictions for 2010!
Until next time,
G
